Which audio format should I choose?
MP3, AAC and M4A
MP3 works with a wide range of players. M4A holds AAC audio for music and everyday listening. Raw AAC is useful when a specific application requests an .aac stream.
OGG Vorbis and Opus
OGG export uses the Vorbis codec. Opus export creates an Ogg Opus .opus file; WebM export puts Opus audio in a WebM container. Vorbis uses a quality scale, while Opus lets you choose a target bitrate and variable or constant bitrate.
WAV, AIFF, AU and CAF
These exports contain uncompressed PCM audio, useful for editing and compatible audio software. Choose 16-bit for typical listening, 24-bit for suitable production workflows or 32-bit float when your editor requires it. 32-bit AIFF uses the AIFF-C variant.
FLAC, ALAC, WavPack and TTA
These codecs use lossless compression. FLAC is a common music archive format, while ALAC is Apple Lossless in an M4A container. WavPack uses .wv and True Audio uses .tta. MKA export packages FLAC in Matroska audio. Lossless export cannot restore detail already removed by a lossy source.
WMA, MP2, AC-3 and E-AC-3
Use these when a particular device, player or media workflow asks for them. This converter exports mono or stereo audio; it does not preserve surround channel layouts.
M4R ringtone files
M4R export creates an AAC ringtone file from the beginning of your audio, capped at 40 seconds. To pick another section first, use Audio Trimmer. Importing the ringtone onto your phone is a separate step.
Understanding audio quality
Bitrate is the amount of encoded data per second. Higher settings generally preserve more detail in lossy audio and increase file size. VBR lets Opus vary the bitrate with the audio while using your selected rate as its target.
Sample rate controls samples per second. The converter keeps the source rate where the selected codec supports it, or uses a compatible rate. Bit depth controls PCM precision in uncompressed and supported lossless exports. Upsampling or choosing a higher bit depth does not recover missing source detail.
Lossless compression levels change file size and processing effort rather than quality. Converting an MP3 to FLAC gives you a lossless copy of that MP3's decoded audio; it does not recover the original recording.
Frequently asked questions
Is this audio converter free and private?
Yes. Every export target is free for all visitors with no sign-up or daily allowance. Your file stays in the browser. The wider site's cookie use is described in our privacy policy.
Which audio files can I import?
The bundled decoder accepts many common audio types, including MP3, WAV, OGG, Opus, FLAC, M4A, AAC, AIFF, WMA, AC-3, WavPack, TTA, AU and CAF. You can also select a supported video file to extract its first audio track. Damaged, encrypted or unsupported files cannot be converted.
Why are OGG and Opus separate options?
Ogg is a container. The OGG option writes Vorbis audio in that container, while the Opus option writes Opus audio in an Ogg .opus file. Choose the option required by your target player or application.
How large can my file be?
One input file can be up to 100 MB and 20 minutes long. Downloads are capped at 150 MB. Large uncompressed audio can exceed that limit; try a compressed format, lower sample rate or mono output. Mobile devices may need smaller files.
Does the preview play the whole file?
The source listening preview contains the first 60 seconds at up to 44.1 kHz in mono or stereo. The waveform represents the whole file, and conversion uses the whole file except M4R's 40-second limit. Click near the start of the waveform to seek within the preview. A converted file can also be played here when your browser supports its format.
Why does an output not play in my browser?
Browser playback support is narrower than the converter's export support. Download formats such as WMA, AC-3, WavPack, TTA or MKA and open them in a compatible media player.
Are artist tags and cover art preserved?
Title, artist and album tags are removed by default. Enable the tag option to copy metadata supported by the chosen output format. Cover art and video are always excluded.
Can I improve a low-quality recording?
A higher bitrate, sample rate or bit depth cannot restore missing detail. Convert from the best available original and avoid repeated lossy conversions. This page changes formats and encoding settings; use Audio Trimmer for cuts and fades.
