Best with a PNG with a transparent background: empty areas stay empty, so you only build the picture.

How it picks the blocks

  1. Real block coloursEvery block face was measured from the game's own textures, averaged the way light mixes (in linear light), so a speckled block counts as the colour you see from a distance.
  2. Matched the way you see colourEach pixel goes to the block that looks closest, judged half by CIEDE2000 (the standard for subtle shades) and half by plain Lab distance (which keeps bright colours the right hue). Ties go to plainer blocks, so pictures look clean.
  3. Only blocks that workSolid full blocks you can get in survival, in both Java and Bedrock. No glass or leaves, nothing that changes over time (copper is waxed, coral is the dead kind), and on a wall nothing that falls.
What does cheap materials leave out?

Every block has a rarity from 1 (everywhere: dirt, stone, wool, concrete, planks) to 5 (very rare). Cheap materials only uses 1 to 3, so it leaves out diamond, netherite, emerald, gold, lapis and raw gold blocks, ancient debris, every ore (they need silk touch), gilded blackstone, blue ice and sponges.

Why a PNG with a transparent background?

See-through pixels become air, so you only build the picture itself. A picture with a solid background turns that background into blocks too.

Wall or floor?

A wall stands up like a painting and uses the side of each block. A floor (map art) lies flat and uses the top, which is the colour that shows on a Minecraft map and when you look down from the sky.
